What an OUTRAGE! It is not just about the low performance. It is about what they teach in this school, and the hidden agenda behind it. It can no way be considered an American public school by any means! What the hell is their (LAUSD’s) malfunction???

Update!: The board dealt with another potential controversy Thursday when it voted to renew an El Sereno school’s charter less than three weeks after district staff advised against doing so.

In a March 13 report on Academia Semillas del Pueblo, the staff cited low test scores, unconventional instruction and potentially conflicting school governance. About two weeks later, facing growing political pressure from former City Councilman Richard Alatorre, former Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg and others, the staff changed course.

Under the five-year renewal conditions, Semillas must meet benchmarks that for three years would place it at least at the median of comparable schools in terms of state and national standards. Data show Semillas ranks lowest among similar schools.

Lansing, who voted not to renew the Semillas charter, said he was puzzled by how the staff switched its recommendation despite evidence of poor performance.

Here’s hoping…!

LAUSD Considers Closing Charter School

academiasemillasdelpueblo1.jpg

Academia Semillas del Pueblo in El Sereno is an LAUSD charter school that is facing closure. It is one of several schools in the district being evaluated on the basis of charter renewal. Supporters of the school have attended a hearing and been calling on LAUSD school board members to extend Academia’s charter for another five years. An organization of concerned parents has spoken out against an evaluation process based solely on an English-only standardized test.

They sure have some humongous cajones, don’t they? As opposed to what alternative evaluation process I’d like to know. And just to enlighten those who must not be aware of the fact, that we speak ENGLISH here. This is AMERICA after all.

There will be a large rally and march on March 29th at noon at the La Placita Olvera, to urge LAUSD to renew the Academia Semillas del Pueblo charter.

Thanks to the fine folks at UprisingRadio, all taxpaying citizens can contact LAUSD and give them a piece of our collective minds. They have compiled a detailed list we should all take advantage of. We only have till 3/29/07 to voice our opinions!

LAUSD board members can be contacted at 333 South Beaudry Avenue, 24th Floor, Los Angeles, CA 90017. They can also be reached via phone and email at:

As of our most recent communication, the LAUSD administration has made a verbal commitment to RENEWAL.

Terms for renewal have been set by our proposal and are currently under consideration by their staff.

Because of continous parental and community support, we have seen this positive turn-around in our charter renewal.

We must continue to organize support and advocacy to make sure the LAUSD administration keeps its word and the Board supports renewal on 3/29/07.

Informational Bulletin 3: Women’s Struggles and The Encounter Between the Zapatistas and the Peoples of the World

Excerpt:

They explained that Zapatista education relates the 13 demands of their struggle with four knowledge areas: life and environment, math, history, and languages. True education, they said, originates from the people and is not imposed by bad governments.

The speeches by the Zapatista authorities were followed by those of compañeros and compañeras from many countries around the world. Among them was Mixper, a Chicana of Huichol origin, from the APC Collective and the educational project Semillas del Pueblo, who explained that in the US people of color, the children of migrants and indigenous peoples, are marginalized, ridiculed, treated as inferiors, and their dreams are stolen in public schools.

The school Academia Semillas del Pueblo was built on the dreams of the people from the community in order to rescue indigenous identity and traditions and to develop students with a strong indigenous identity.

Brothers and sisters from Mexicans Without Borders also participated, in addition to compas, from Ya Basta (Italy), Schools for Chiapas (US), and a people’s adult prosperity school in Madrid.

Suspect arrested in attack of KABC reporter - Saturday, September 23, 2006

Police arrested a man suspected of assaulting a reporter from a radio station that has criticized an El Sereno charter school for allegedly promoting racial separatism for Latinos.

Ramon Flores, 31, of Boyle Heights was taken into custody Thursday near the Academia Semillas del Pueblo Charter School, Los Angeles Police Lt. Paul Vernon said. Flores was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and robbery, he said.

Mexican Separatist School Pushes Marxism, Anti-Americanism

A school in Los Angeles, California, is using taxpayer money to push a radical separatist agenda to its students, according to evidence [P.D.F. file] obtained by Judicial Watch through the California Public Records Act. Academia Semillas del Pueblo (Seeds of the People Academy) was ostensibly established to provide an alternative to traditional schools and better education options for Latinos. Behind the façade, statements by the school’s president, Mexican radical Marcos Aguilar, prove that the school’s purpose is far more threatening.

Hispanic Supremacy: Judicial Watch Investigates The Reconquista School

In 2001, Marcos Aguilar (school principal and General of the reconquista army) wrote a letter to La Raza (NCLR) requesting funding. In that letter he wrote:

“Our commitment to develop an excellent school that embraces our culture, defends our languages, and unites our families will reinforce the NCLR’s commitment to help organize charter schools…”

A couple apparent supporters trudged back looking dejected, shoulders slumped… no official word yet, but judging from the reactions of these two, Judgment Day was not to the supporters’ liking.
